Our Organic Greek Fir honey was nominated for the category of “Outstanding Honey, Jam, Preserve or Nut Butter” and is in the running to possibly capture a Gold award and best in category this July.

Every year the Specialty Food association holds it’s annual red carpet event celebrating the “Best of the best” in 35 different food categories such as Condiments, Cookies, Appetizer, Cheese, Meat, Snacks and Packaging to mention just a few. The sofi™ Award is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a food producer within the specialty food industry; simply being recognized and nominated within the respective honey category was fantastic news for us especially on the heels of also recently winning a gold medal at the BiolMiel International Organic Honey Competition.

We’re looking forward to over 200 food experts from various backgrounds and industries to sample and vote on our Organic Fir Honey when the show and award ceremony is in New York City from June 30 to July 2, 2013. The announcement and ceremony will be Monday July, 1 2013 and will be hosted by the internationally acclaimed Chef Marcus Samuelsson.

We’re all very excited to be taking part in the Summer Food Show and award ceremony. All of our current products will be on display and available to sample at Booth 5353. The show is closed off from the public, however if you’re in the industry and will be attending please stop by and see us. Congratulations and best of luck to all the other fellow 2013 nominees and sofi silver finalists…we’ll see you all on the red carpet this July!

This prestigious organic honey competition took place in January 2013 in Bologna, Italy and was administered by an international jury who evaluated over 170 organic honeys from around the world. The BIOLMIEL jury is comprised of Italian and foreign expert honey tasters who evaluate each honey by taste, chemical and physical analysis.

Eulogia Organic Greek Fir honey is the only Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) honey in Greece, collected in high altitudes in mountainous Vitina, Peloponnese. Having a unique pearly sheen appearance, this raw and extraordinary honey is produced from the honeydew left behind by microorganisms on the bark of fir trees after feeding on the tree sap rather than nectar from flowers.

Our gold-winning organic Greek Fir honey will be released as a limited edition series and will debut this June at the Specialty Food Show in New York City. Our silver-winning organic fir honey will be joining the ranks of our standard honey line and will also be available this summer.

It is an everyday common misconception that eating locally found honey helps build immunity to allergies. Many believe that because allergies are caused by pollen, then the pollen bees use in honey production should give some immunity to those who consume it on a regular basis. Unfortunately, it is not that easy to steer clear from that springtime runny nose, itchy eyes and constant sneezing! The pollen found in honey is not the same type of pollen that humans have allergic reactions to (primarily those found in blossoming flowers).

Research and controlled studies have debunked this longtime theory and have shown no evidence that local honey relieves allergy symptoms. The National Center for Biotechnology (NCBI) published a study conducted by the University of Connecticut Clinical Research Center concluding that their study did not confirm that honey relieves the symptoms of allergic rhinoconjunctivitis. Click here for more information on the study.

One of the most frequent questions we are asked is if our honey is infused or flavored with other ingredients to give it its distinct flavor. The answer is ABSOLUTELY NOT. Eulogia honey is a raw and natural honey, neither artificially flavored nor infused with other ingredients.

The way it works is like this: Our beehives are placed in specific locations with miles of nothing but abundant blossoming flowers. Since most of our honey is monofloral, our beekeepers carefully place beehives in an area where the bees have access to only one type of flower. The bees then travel freely about three miles on average from their hive and suck the surrounding flower nectar as their food and energy source. The nectar they consume remains in their stomachs as they make their way back to the hive. While in the bee’s stomach, this nectar mixes with bee proteins and enzymes, naturally producing honey which is then regurgitated into the beeswax comb. Eulogia honey is carefully collected directly from the hive and packaged without being exposed to high heat, pasteurization or processing in order to preserve its natural abundance of vitamins and minerals.

Flavor and color variations in honey depend on the flora which the bees feed on as well as local climate. This is why, for example, Eulogia Sage Blossom honey will not have the same taste, color or viscosity as a sage honey produced in California. It is a known fact that honey absorbs moisture directly from the air and therefore the amount of water in a honey is dependent on relative humidity in the air. Our honey has a thicker consistency than most honey due to Greece’s dry climate and minimal amount of humidity.

Exhibiting at the 2012 Summer NASFT Fancy Food Show was probably one of the more exciting events we’ve participated in as a business. The National Associate of the Specialty Food Trade (NASFT) holds two shows annually, one in the winter (on the west coast) and one in the summer (on the east coast). This is an opportunity for NASFT accepted specialty food related businesses to show off their products and meet with thousands of retailers, distributors, restauranteurs, etc. who are on the lookout for new and exciting products in the hopes of making available to the public.

While at the 3 day food extravaganza, we met and chatted with many of the well known national retailers such as Whole Foods, William Sonoma, Fairway Markets not to mention numerous smaller chains and mom and pop shops from around the world. Guests were encouraged to taste our Greek raw honey varieties as well as try our organic extra virgin olive oil, which was either sipped from a cup or dipped in bread (courtesy of our exhibiting neighbor Joe) from Average Joe’s Artisan Bread.

We were very flattered and proud to hear feedback from leading retail buyers after stopping by our booth and trying our premium Greek products. Elizabeth from gourmet foods purveyor Chelsea Market Baskets in New York City said, “we really loved the color gradient of your honeys and thought the olive oils were really nice too.”

Not only was the show a great way to get our products noticed and to learn what folks in the specialty food industry had to say about them, but it was surely an invaluable learning experience! This is one show you just cannot afford to miss!
